Obverse Design: The obverse of the coin showcases a full-body depiction of a majestic adult leopard standing on a rocky outcrop, turning its head as if listening to the sounds of the African bush. The artwork is framed at the bottom by stylised vegetation reminiscent of ivory tusks. It also features the legal-tender issuing authority “SOUTH AFRICA”, the series name “BIG FIVE”, the year of issue, and the official South African Coat of Arms. Reverse Design: The reverse features an ingenious, interactive design element that remains consistent throughout the Big 5 series: two mirrored halves of a leopard’s face. Collectors who place two coins side-by-side will complete a full portrait of the animal. When multiple coins are placed in a row, they form a visual representation of a “leap” of leopards. The centre of the reverse contains a circular inset that details the coin’s exact weight 1/4oz, face value 5 Rand, and gold purity.
