Description
The “Odyssey of the Sky” series, launched by the South African Mint, begins its metaphorical journey of the wild with the iconic Bateleur Eagle, a bird whose name means “tightrope walker” in French due to its dramatic acrobatic flight over the African savannah. This legal tender coin carries a face value of R100 (One Hundred Rand) and is minted from one troy ounce (31.107 grams) of 24-karat gold with a fineness of Au 999.9. In terms of physical dimensions, the gold piece features a diameter of 32.69 mm. The artistic design of the coin celebrates both native wildlife and local culture. The reverse showcases a highly detailed, high-relief profile of the Bateleur eagle’s head, which is surrounded by delicate geometric ornaments inspired by traditional Isishweshwe cloth. On the obverse side, the coin beautifully displays the official Coat of Arms of the Republic of South Africa, seamlessly bordered by similar indigenous design motifs to complete the aesthetic.
