The 2026 1/4 oz South African Gold Krugerrand is an iconic, highly liquid investment coin containing exactly one-quarter ounce of pure gold. Struck in durable 22-karat gold alloyed with copper, it features the historic portrait of President Paul Kruger on the obverse and the nation’s symbolic Springbok antelope on the reverse

Description

First introduced in 1980 to make gold investing more accessible, the 1/4 oz Krugerrand carries the same historical prestige and global recognition as the original 1 oz version. The name “Krugerrand” combines the surname of the 19th-century South African Republic President, Paul Kruger, with the “rand,” South Africa’s unit of currency.  The one-quarter ounce South African Krugerrand has a total weight of 8.48 grams, which includes exactly 7.78 grams of pure gold. It is minted with a purity of 22 karats, consisting of 91.67% gold and 8.33% copper to ensure enhanced durability and its signature hue. Physically, the coin features a diameter of 22.06 mm and a thickness of 1.89 mm. The obverse side was designed by Otto Schultz and features the left-facing profile of President Paul Kruger. This historic portrait is bordered by the country’s name inscribed in both Afrikaans and English as “SUID-AFRIKA” and “SOUTH AFRICA”. On the reverse side, the artwork by sculptor Coert Steynberg showcases South Africa’s national animal, the iconic pronking Springbok antelope. The reverse layout also prominently displays the 2026 year of mintage, the coin’s official name as “1/4 KRUGERRAND”, and the gold content designated as “FYNGOUD 1/4 OZ FINE GOLD”. While this bullion piece is considered official legal tender within South Africa, it does not have a face value stamped on its surface. Instead, its actual value is tied directly to the fluctuating daily spot price of gold.
