Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about buying South African gold and silver coins from Uzumba. Can’t find your answer? Contact us directly — we’re happy to help.

Buying Gold & Silver

Buying from Uzumba is simple. You can:

  • Browse our shop online and click “Enquire” or “Order Here” on any product
  • Contact us directly via email at info@uzumba.co.za or WhatsApp
  • Visit us by appointment at Capital Office Park, Steyn City, Fourways

We’ll confirm your order in writing with a locked price, then you complete payment. Once cleared, your coin is either ready for collection or dispatched via insured courier.

Yes — Uzumba operates by appointment only. We are not a walk-in retail store. This allows us to provide each client with dedicated, private service and ensures the security of our stock.

Appointments are available Tuesday to Saturday, 10h00 to 16h00 at Block A, Capital Office Park, 1 Central Lane, Steyn City, Johannesburg. Book your appointment here.

There is no formal minimum purchase. You can start with a single 1/10oz Krugerrand or a 1oz silver coin. However, for clients making their first purchase, we recommend starting with at least a 1oz gold coin for meaningful exposure to the gold market.

For portfolio building advice, speak to one of our consultants — we guide first-time buyers through the full process at no charge.

All coins sold by Uzumba are 100% authentic South African Mint products. Uzumba is an authorised dealer of the South African Mint and sources coins directly through authorised channels. Our gold bullion is sourced from the Rand Refinery — South Africa’s national gold refinery.

Every coin we sell comes with its original SA Mint packaging and certificate of authenticity where applicable. We do not sell second-hand or unverified coins.

Yes. We offer nationwide insured courier delivery. All deliveries are fully insured at replacement value and require a signature upon receipt. Delivery charges are quoted separately at the time of order based on your location and the value of the shipment.

Alternatively, you can collect in person from our Steyn City offices by appointment.

Pricing

Bullion prices are set by the international spot market. The gold spot price is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce and fluctuates continuously during trading hours. Uzumba converts the spot price to South African Rand using the prevailing USD/ZAR exchange rate, then adds a small premium to cover dealer costs.

Our premiums are fixed and transparent: 4% over spot for gold and 6% over spot for silver. There are no hidden fees. You can view our live pricing on the Live Pricing page.

Gold and silver are traded on global markets 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. Prices shift continuously based on supply and demand, US dollar strength, interest rate expectations, inflation data, and geopolitical events. The ZAR price also moves with the Rand exchange rate, which adds another layer of volatility for South African buyers.

This is why we provide a price lock at the time of Order Confirmation — the price you agree to is the price you pay, regardless of market movements after that point.

Yes — EFT payments receive a 2% discount on the confirmed order price. This is because EFT payments carry no processing fees for us, and we pass that saving directly to you.

The discount is applied at the time of Order Confirmation when you indicate your payment method.

FICA & Identity Verification

FICA stands for the Financial Intelligence Centre Act. As a dealer in precious metals, Uzumba is legally required to verify the identity of all clients before completing any transaction. This is a South African legal requirement, not an optional step.

You will need to provide:

  • A certified copy of your South African ID or valid passport
  • Proof of residential address not older than three months (utility bill, bank statement, etc.)

Your documents are stored securely and handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy.

Yes. We handle all personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). We never sell or share your information with third parties except as required by law (FICA/FIC reporting obligations) or to fulfil your order (courier services).

For full details, read our Privacy Policy.

About Our Coins

The Krugerrand is South Africa’s iconic gold bullion coin, first minted in 1967 by the South African Mint. It is 22-carat gold (91.67% pure gold, 8.33% copper for durability) and is one of the most widely traded gold coins in the world.

It is available in four sizes: 1oz, ½oz, ¼oz, and 1/10oz. A proof (collector) version is also produced annually in limited numbers, featuring a mirror-finish and frosted relief design. The Krugerrand is legal tender in South Africa.

Bullion coins are produced primarily for their metal content. Their price tracks the spot price closely, with a small dealer premium. They are the best choice for investors who want direct gold exposure.

Proof coins are struck multiple times for a higher-quality finish — mirror fields, frosted relief. They are produced in limited numbers, come in collector packaging with certificates, and carry a higher premium over spot. Proof coins appeal to collectors and investors who want both aesthetic value and metal value.

The Big 5 is a South African Mint coin series celebrating South Africa’s iconic wildlife: the Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Rhino, and Buffalo. Available in gold and silver, they are struck to proof quality and issued in limited mintages. The series combines precious metal investment with collector appeal and makes an exceptional gift.

Selling & Returns

Yes — Uzumba may repurchase coins, particularly coins originally sold by us. Buy-back prices are based on the prevailing spot price at the time of repurchase and are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

To discuss a buy-back, contact us with details of the coins you wish to sell. FICA verification is required for all buy-back transactions.

Due to the precious metal nature of our products and continuous price fluctuations, all bullion sales are final. We do not accept returns once a transaction is confirmed and payment cleared. This is standard practice across all reputable bullion dealers.

If you received the wrong item or a damaged product, contact us within 24 hours of receipt. See our Terms & Conditions for full details.
