Investing in Precious Metals
Uzumba (Pty) Ltd · Last updated: 1 July 2026 · For South African investors
Gold, silver, and platinum have served as stores of value for thousands of years. For South Africans — with the Rand's persistent weakness against hard currencies — physical precious metals offer one of the most direct forms of protection available to individual investors.
This guide explains how precious metals work, why South Africans invest in them, and how to get started with Uzumba.
Why Physical Gold?
Gold is money. Everything else is credit.
— J.P. Morgan, testimony to the United States Congress, 1912
Unlike equities, bonds, or property, physical gold carries no counterparty risk. It is no one’s liability. It cannot be created by a central bank or inflated away by government policy. This makes it fundamentally different from every other asset class.
For South African investors specifically, gold serves three purposes:
- Rand hedge: Gold is priced globally in USD. When the Rand weakens, the Rand price of gold rises — often dramatically. Over the past decade, rand-denominated gold returns have significantly outpaced inflation and many local equity indices.
- Portfolio insurance: Gold historically performs best when other asset classes — equities, property, and bonds — are under stress. It provides genuine diversification.
- Wealth preservation: Physical coins and bars cannot be hacked, frozen by a bank, or rendered worthless by corporate failure. Your coins are entirely within your control.

The South African Context
South Africa occupies a unique position in the global gold market — we are among the world’s largest gold producers, yet most South Africans own no physical gold at all. The South African Rand has lost roughly 95% of its value against the US Dollar since 1980.
This has profound implications for how South Africans should think about savings:
- A Rand savings account earning 8% interest may actually be losing purchasing power in real terms if inflation is higher
- An investment denominated in ZAR carries full currency risk — if the Rand falls 20%, so does the real value of that investment
- Physical gold is a global asset. Its price reflects global supply and demand, not South African monetary policy
- The SA Mint’s Krugerrand — minted since 1967 — is recognised and tradeable in over 100 countries
The Rand effect in practice: If gold falls 5% in USD terms but the Rand weakens 8% against the Dollar in the same period, the ZAR gold price actually rises 3%. South African investors benefit from this dual exposure.

Most investors start with gold for stability and liquidity, then diversify into silver and platinum as their portfolio grows. Uzumba stocks all three, with a particular focus on South African Mint-issued coins — the most trusted and recognisable bullion coins in South Africa.
Bullion Coins vs Numismatic Coins
Understanding the difference between these two categories is essential before you buy:
- Bullion coins are bought and sold close to the metal’s spot price. Their value is primarily determined by the weight and purity of the metal. Examples: standard Krugerrands, Natura series. These are the most liquid form of physical gold.
- Numismatic (collector) coins carry a premium above spot due to their rarity, age, condition, and historical significance. Their value can appreciate beyond the metal price — but this requires knowledge of the collector market.
For new investors: Start with bullion coins. They are easiest to buy, sell, and value. Numismatic coins require specialised knowledge and are better suited to experienced collectors.
The South African Krugerrand
The Krugerrand was first minted by the South African Mint in 1967. It was the world’s first modern gold bullion coin and remains one of the most recognised and widely traded coins on earth.
- Purity: 22 carat (91.67% gold, balance copper for durability)
- Exact gold content: 1 troy ounce of fine gold in the 1 oz coin
- No face value: Its value is always the market price of the gold it contains
- Available sizes: 1 oz, ½ oz, ¼ oz, &frac110; oz
- Obverse: Paul Kruger (former South African President)
- Reverse: The Springbok, South Africa’s national animal
- Legal tender: Yes — in South Africa, Krugerrands are legal tender at their gold value
Silver and platinum Krugerrands were introduced in more recent decades, offering the same iconic design in different metals for different budget ranges.
How to Buy Precious Metals
- Decide on your budget and allocation. Most advisors suggest between 5% and 15% of investable assets in precious metals. Decide whether you’re buying for long-term holding or shorter-term trading.
- Choose your metal. For first-time buyers, 1 oz gold Krugerrands or silver coins are the most practical starting point.
- Contact Uzumba. Submit an enquiry via our form or call us. We’ll discuss availability, pricing, and answer any questions.
- Receive your Order Confirmation. Your price is locked in writing. Prices move constantly — the written confirmation is your guarantee.
- Complete FICA. South African law requires identity verification. Provide your ID and proof of address. This is a once-off process per client.
- Pay and receive. EFT (with 2% discount) or SnapScan. Collect in person or receive via insured courier.
- Store securely. Physical gold requires safe storage. Options include a home safe (rated for the value held), bank vault, or professional vault storage.
Storing Your Coins
Physical precious metals must be stored securely. Here are your main options:
- Home safe: Convenient and fully within your control. Ensure the safe is rated for the value of contents and is bolted to the structure. Notify your insurer and ensure your policy covers bullion.
- Bank vault / safe deposit box: Available at most major South African banks. Access is limited to branch hours. Check whether your bank’s contents insurance covers precious metals.
- Professional vault storage: Specialist storage companies offer insured, audited, and allocated storage for precious metals. Appropriate for larger holdings.
Insurance: Standard home contents insurance does not always cover bullion. Check your policy schedule and contact your insurer before storing coins at home. Uzumba can advise on typical cover options.
Selling Your Coins
One of the advantages of Krugerrands and other major bullion coins is their global liquidity. You can sell to:
- Uzumba: We offer buy-back quotes on coins sold by Uzumba. Contact us for a current quote based on the live spot price.
- Coin dealers: Specialist dealers can provide competitive quotes, particularly for numismatic coins.
- Private buyers: Peer-to-peer sales are legal but carry more risk. Ensure authentication and secure payment.
- International markets: Krugerrands are recognised and traded in over 100 countries.
Buy-back prices are based on the prevailing spot price at the time of sale. The price you sell at may be higher or lower than what you paid, depending on where the gold price has moved. Physical gold is a long-term investment, not a short-term trading vehicle.
